As a cyclist you could visit Berlin to participate in the 10,000 strong Velothon; where you could choose one of two distances, 60 or 120km. As we wind down for the year I thought I'd collate the articles that we wrote in 2014 and provide links for Xmas reading! Dr Steven Fleming, author of CycleSpace and I have been writing academic papers and articles for The Conversation on topics around cycling and urban design. We've been doing this because we both advocate for cycling through better design of products, services and our cities. Bike racks are big business - except for me!

In 2008 The Smithsonian Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum, in conjunction with New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) and  Transportation Alternatives announced the winners of the CityRacks Design Competition. Since then, the winning design, the NYC HOOP RACK by Ian Mahaffy and  Maarten de Greeve has become the new standard bicycle rack for the streets of New York City. In 2013, the winners of the indoor cycle parking facility section of the same competition, Cyclehoop, have seemed to inspire the design for cycle stands in New York.
